Sketches of Stockbridge, Edinburgh #1

Updated: Apr 20, 2023

In the shadow of St Stephen's Church, Edinburgh...

Designed by renowned neoclassical architect William Henry Playfair the imposing structure of St Stephen's Church, which was built in 1827, was originally designed to be located in the centre of Circus Place before it was re designed to fit into its' current site. St Stephen's church boasts the longest clock pendulum in Europe and its' distinctive clock tower is a great way to find your bearings from other parts of the city.

Many consider St Stephen Street itself to be the gateway to Stockbridge, an interesting mix of people have always made it a little bit more bohemian than other parts of Edinburgh New Town and it has had a few famous residents over the years, including novelist Ian Rankin who lived at number 77 in the early '80s when he was a student and Nico from the Velvet Underground who lived near the old market briefly towards the end of her life.

With an eclectic mix of independent shops, delis, bars and restaurants, it is an excellent spot to stop, linger and sketch.
